Introducing a Precinct of Knowledge
The Australian Federal Government’s National Innovation and Science Agenda recognises that innovation is important to every sector of the economy. A core pillar of the Agenda and a focus of the ‘Ideas Boom’ is collaboration, which encourages the brightest minds in research and business to work together to create novel solutions and job-creating enterprises.
Located in one of Western Australia’s fastest growing regions just 25 minutes north of Perth are the City of Joondalup and the main campus of Edith Cowan University (ECU). Joondalup is a modern, master planned City, recognised as a major driver of economic growth with major health, education, business and retail precincts, with a stable, proactive local government. ECU is a five-star rated university, with world-class research institutes, which has made multi-million dollar investment into its facilities and researchers in recent years.
Both organisations benefit from a close collaborative relationship and long-standing membership of the wider Joondalup Learning Precinct, which also includes the Western Australian Police Academy and North Metropolitan TAFE (formerly known as West Coast Institute).
Understanding the strategic importance of research and innovation on business development and job creation, the ECU Office of Research and Innovation (ORI) and the City’s Economic Development team are well positioned to respond to the National Innovation and Science Agenda. The organisations recently reviewed the physical, technological and intellectual assets already present in Joondalup and identified a unique opportunity to support the recognition and further development of an Innovation Precinct. The aim of the Precinct is to facilitate ongoing productive engagement between academia (research), industry and government.
